Drums - by Nicole

Hi: In the winter time at Westmount Public School, our librarian showed us drumming with one of her friends named Kathleen. She is a great drummer too – just like our librarian Ms. Miller. Ms Miller is teaching our grade 3 class two things. A song called Zome Nomy Na and a drum beat that we played on our drums. We made our own drums and this is how we made our drums.

Materials:
Big white peace of paper --- Crayons --- Ruler --- Scissors
Water Jug --- Coloured tape --- Water

Method:
1. Get your piece of paper and crayons and draw a design and colour it in dark.
2. When you are finished you put your finished piece of work in the water
3. You crumple up the wet paper and let it dry
4. Measure the paper to fit on the jug. Tape it on with your tape.
Now you have A DRUM!

Hi: I really like drumming because I love art. I made my own drum by:
1. Getting a jug
2. Getting a big sheet of paper and colour dark designs.
3. Tape the paper to the jug and there you go.

I also liked drumming because it was a very good experience to our class. The person who taught us was named Ms. Miller our librarian. The drum song we did is called Zaminah. The beat we drummed to is “don’t forget the beat 1-2-3” Our class teacher liked it so much she took drumming lessons. Bye-Bye for now.

When I was drumming I felt happy and excited. It was cool when I made a drum. My class also learned about Africa. Did you know they had to get water from a well? It was confusing to clap, march and do a swimming move, but it was fun. We sang an African song. The person who taught us was Ms. Miller our librarian.

One day Ms. Miller and Mrs. Ischkin and Kathleen wanted to do something for our class. Ms. Miller and Kathleen decided to take drumming lessons. They liked it so much that they even bought a six hundred dollar drum. Then Ms. Miller told us how to make a drum. Then Mrs. Ischkin got a whole bunch of jugs to make our drums out of. We got a big piece of paper and drew designs on it. Finally we got to tape the paper to the jug. Later we got to perform for the whole school. It was GREAT!!!

One day Mrs. Ischkin and Ms. Miller planned a day we could make drums. We made it with a big water jug and paper. We made a design on the paper, then taped it on our jugs. On our first practice Ms. Miller had a friend named Kathleen come along. I loved doing drums and I still play my drum at home. I loved performing. Me and my friend Jeremy had to go and introduce the stuff we were going to do in front of the school. I liked when Kathleen came in to help. I wish I could play drums as good as Ms. Miller and Kathleen.

In drumming we learned how to sing a song called “Zomy-Nomy-Na” We also played a song on our drums. Some people were nervous. My drum was made from a plastic water jug, some paper, decorations, paint and tape. I really loved it. It was fun.

I felt happy playing my drum. I also felt happy singing and dancing at the same time, but it was sort of hard. My favorite thing is drumming and we sounded very good.

I learned if you bang the drum it will make different sounds – depends where you bang it. I didn’t really like performing in front of everybody. I was nervous. I just like practicing.

On Friday February 27, 2004 our grade three class performed at the assembly. We sang Zamina and played a song on our drums. I had an O.K. time, but drumming isn’t my thing. But I will keep my drum for a souvenir.

I felt good about making the drum. Drumming and singing were both really fun. I still play to my parts. I felt good to introduce the song called Zomenomeyna and the drum song. It felt good to play at the spirit assembly.

I felt shy and nervous when we were going to perform in the gym in front of the whole school. Two boys in our class introduced us and announced what we were going to do. Their names are Jordan and Jeremy. We made our own drums and designed them. We sang Zamin Nami Na and played on our drums. I was nervous but we sounded good.

We learned a few songs and I got to play on a real drum. The beat was my name. It was fun. Then we had to drum in front of my whole school. I was scared.

The drumming experience made me feel very good about myself because for two weeks the grade three class has been practicing and learning how to drum. When we learning how to drum, we didn’t have a drum yet so we used hands and knees for practice. Then one day a boy in my class named Trent and his Mom brought in 30 big water cooler jugs! So we made our drums out of the water cooler jugs. For the decoration fro the drum, we made fancy design on a thick piece of paper. It was fun!

In the winter our grade 3 class was studying African drums with our librarian Ms. Miller. She taught us a cool song called Zamin Namin Na. We also played the drums and the tune went don’t forget the beat. We practiced a lot because we were going to play the drums in front of the whole entire school and sing the song Zamin Namin Na. The song Zamin Nami Na is a welcoming song. When we gave our presentation I was kind of scared, but in the end people loved us.

African drumming can be really hard when you have to make your own drum. How do I know? Because I made one. “Wow” you say, well it’s true. You do not want to make a drum, but if you do I will tell you how. You need to have a water jug, paper, coloured tape, and crayons. If you want to use glitter you can if you like.

On Friday February 27, my grade 3 class sang and danced, and played the drums. We had fun. I still play my drum at home.
